Objectives: This is a general overview of what
the teacher will teach and what the student is expected to master.
The student will use
word recognition and vocabulary (word meaning) skills to
communicate.The student will apply knowledge of roots
and affixesto determine and infer the meaning of unfamiliar words.The student
will develop and apply expansive knowledge of words and word meanings to
communicate.The student will use context clues to determine the meanings of
unfamiliar or multiple meaning words.
The student will use context clues to determine the figurative meanings
metaphor, personification, hyperbole, idiom) of text and to communicate.The
student will apply strategies and skills to comprehend, respond to, interpret,
or evaluate a variety of texts of increasing length, difficulty, and
complexity.Infer the implied main idea from one or more related texts. Justify
inferences about main idea by providing supporting details. Evaluate author’s use of sequence for its
effect on the text. Infer how the sequence of events may have contributed to
cause and effect relationships in a text.
Apply knowledge of cause and effect relationships to infer logical
causes and/or effects.Synthesize information stated in one or more texts with
prior knowledge and experience to draw valid conclusions with supporting
evidence including text based-evidence. Predict a logical outcome based upon
information stated in a text and confirm or revise based upon subsequent text.
Author’s purpose The student will express,
communicate, evaluate, or exchange ideas effectively. Revising - Revise
selected drafts by adding, elaborating, deleting, and rearranging text based on
teacher/peer feedback, writer’s checklist, or rubric. Editing - Edit/proofread
drafts to ensure standard usage, mechanics, spelling, and varied sentence
structure. The student will incorporate descriptive details into texts
including but not limited to narrative, expository, or persuasive text. The
student will compose informational text utilizing topic sentences, effective
organization, transitions, vivid word choices, and
specific supporting details, including but
not limited to: texts containing chronological order;
procedural. Essays (effective organization, transitions) Nouns
Coordinating/subordinating conjunctions; correlative conjunctions
Pronouns, Pronoun-antecedent
agreement (number and gender; with collective nouns; for relative pronouns; for
indefinite pronouns; with expressions of amount) Spell words commonly found in
seventh grade level text .Apostrophes, Semicolons (compound sentences; with
conjunctive adverbs) Analyze the structure of sentences (e.g., complex
sentences, including independent and dependent clauses; and compound-complex
sentences).
Avoid sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and comma
splices.
Tests and Grades
Grading:
A=90-100 B=80-89 C=75-79
D=70-74 F=below 70 I=incomplete
Grading follows the policies of Biloxi Public
Schools. A mid-term progress report and
a report card following the end of each term are issued. The student’s current grades are available via
Internet IOD. (http://iiod.ssts.com/Home.asp?state=MS)
There will be weekly Spelling and Literature Tests
with pop quizzes for grammar any day. Daily notebooks will be 20%, Tests 40%,
CTA 20%, Participation 20%.
Retesting:
Students may retake any test inside of quarter with
the exception of the CTA. In order to be eligible for retesting a student must
sign up for a reteaching session with Mr. Wadsworth outside of the regular
scheduled classes inaccordance with district policy.
Homework/Assignments/Projects: There will be one group project this term as well as
an idependent author project.
Course Requirements:
Students are expected to come prepared with a good
attitude and complete assignments in a timely manner.
